ブルース・スプリングスティーンの2020 年発表『Letter To You』以来2年振り通算21作目となるニュー・アルバム『オンリー・ザ・ストロング・サヴァイヴ』が2022年11月11日に発売となる。
新作はモータウン、ギャンブル＆ハフ、スタックスなど伝説的なソウル・ミュージックのカヴァー集。ブルース・スプリングスティーンが大きな影響を受け、愛聴してきた60～70年代のソウル・ミュージックの名曲の数々を歌っており、ソングライティングやサウンド作りを優先させてきた通常のアルバム作りから離れ、歌手に徹して、自分の歌唱に焦点を絞った制作を楽しんだ、そして、その素材として主に60～70年代のソウル・ミュージックから、お気に入りの名曲を選んだ作品となっている。好評発売中の本誌No.167 特集「60年代ソウルの基礎知識」と合わせて楽しんでいただけたら幸いだ。
本作よりファースト・シングルの「ドゥ・アイ・ラヴ・ユー」（オリジナルはフランク・ウィルソン）のビデオが公開されている。
ブルース・スプリングスティーンは次のようにコメントしている。
「ただ歌うだけのアルバムを作りたかった。それをやるなら、60年代と70年代の偉大なアメリカのソングブックほど、良い音楽はないだろ？ リーヴァイ・スタッブス（フォー・トップス）、デイヴィッド・ラフィン（テンプテーションズ）、ジミー・ラフィン、“アイスマン”ジェリー・バトラー、ダイアナ・ロス、ドビー・グレイ、スコット・ウォーカーなどの多くのアーティストからインスピレーションを受けてきた。彼ら全員と、これらの輝かしい音楽を書いた素晴らしい作曲家たちにふさわしい作品になるように努力した。その目標は俺がその曲を初めて聴いたときからずっと感じている美しさと喜びを現代の聴衆にも体験してもらうことだ。俺がこのアルバムを作るのをとても楽しんだのと同じくらいにみんなが楽しんで聴いてくれることを願っているよ」
